In response to a petition created to complain about the congestion caused by the city centre transport schemes, Leicester Friends of the Earth and Leicester Cycle Campaign Group offered their support to the ‘Connecting Leicester’ project.
The City Council’s ‘Connecting Leicester’ project aims to improve the connections between shopping, leisure, heritage, housing and transport facilities and remove the dominance of roads in the city centre. Jubilee Square and the new Haymarket Bus Station are key parts of this project and it will also include significant investment in cycling and walking routes, to encourage people to choose more sustainable transport options.
Hannah Wakley from Leicester Friends of the Earth said: “This weekend, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change announced that we need to stop using fossil fuels by the end of the century to avoid dangerous climate change. We also have levels of air pollution in Leicester that cause 250 premature deaths every year. The only way we can tackle these problems is to walk, cycle and take the bus more so we have to make these options more convenient than jumping in the car. We are happy that the City Council are trying to make sustainable transport choices more appealing.”
Leicester Friends of the Earth’s survey earlier this year showed that people are put off cycling and walking because they feel unsafe. To reduce congestion, air pollution and climate change, we need to provide safer cycling and walking routes. Inevitably there will be some disruption while the changes are being made but this is a small price to pay for a healthier environment.
