We were dismayed by Network Rail’s announcement that the electrification of the Midland Mainline had been ‘paused’. We created an online petition asking the Secretary of State for Transport to reverse this decision and resume the electrification project as soon as possible:

The Supreme Court recently ruled that the Government must take more action to reduce air pollution. It is astonishing that they would then decide to ‘pause’ a project that could make such a difference to our air quality. At the moment, diesel trains pass through the centre of Leicester, contributing to air pollution that causes an estimated 250 premature deaths in the city every year. Other cities in the East Midlands are also affected by this problem.
To publicize our petition, we started working with other transport campaigners and we were planning to pass a giant green plug along the Midland Mainline on 17th October 2015. We were aiming to pass it between local campaigners along the line from Sheffield to London and raise public awareness at every stop. However, while we finalizing the timetable for the relay, the government decided to un-pause the project and electrify the Midland Mainline! Success! We cancelled the relay and instead we met outside the railway station on 17th October to celebrate.
