On Monday 9th June, Healthy Air Leicester and Leicestershire challenged Adham Fisher to travel on as many bus routes as possible in Leicester in one day. We hoped that this challenge would raise awareness of air pollution and encourage people to use public transport by demonstrating how easy it is to travel around the city on the bus.
Before the challenge, we posted the details on our website (below) and issued a press release to let everyone know what we were doing. Adham also went to Riverside Festival, along with Steve from Healthy Air Leicester and Leicestershire, to announce the details of the challenge on the main stage.
Adham used a flexi-day ticket to catch buses from all the major bus companies (see the post below for the rules). We have now verified Adham’s records from the day and we are pleased to confirm that he travelled on 72 different bus routes during the day, starting at 5:57 am at the Haymarket Bus Station and finishing at 9:22 pm. The challenge was covered extensively in the Leicester Mercury and on BBC Radio Leicester, which has helped to raise awareness of air pollution in locally. Adham and Hannah also wrote a blog post about the challenge for Greener Journeys. We would like to thank Adham for his contribution to the campaign and the bus companies for their co-operation.
If anyone would like to try to beat Adham’s record, we would be very interested to hear from them! We can be contacted at [email protected]
We are now planning a public transport challenge for Adham to attempt in the county in August. This is proving to be more difficult because there is currently no bus ticket available that covers more than one bus company in the county, so his day’s travel will be more expensive. However, we hope to be able to reveal the details soon - watch this space...
