Very early on the morning of 21st June, we performed a stunt to draw attention to Leicester's high levels of air pollution and the unnecessary sluggishness of the council in dealing with it. Public Health England estimates that 250 people die prematurely every year in Leicester as a result of air pollution. The City Council’s new Air Quality Action Plan acknowledges that air quality standards will not be met in Leicester until a low emission zone is established for all vehicles but they do not plan to do this for 10 years. Healthy Air Leicester and Leicestershire believes that 10 years is too long to wait for clean air.
We put anti-pollution masks on statues around Leicester to raise awareness of the city’s poor record on air pollution. As each statue was masked, we posted a photo on Leicester Friends of the Earth Facebook and Twitter pages. The photos received considerable attention on social media and the story was also covered in detail by the Leicester Mercury and Radio Leicester.
